Project Management Basics

Posted on January 29, 2024January 30, 2024 By Ashwini Kamath

The word project comes from the Latin word projectum and from the Latin verb proicere, “before an action”. “pro” means “something that comes before something else in time” and “iacere” means “to do”.

Project is a series of tasks done to achieve a new deliverable.

It has to have constraints (goal, time, cost and quality). Sub constraints like resources, people etc will most likely be present.

A project is a collection of segments namely initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control and closing.

A need should start a project. Wanting a new product or service. Or wanting to improve efficiency of current processes. Or wanting to make way out for old product/ service. Each of them can be a project.

Structuring the need and tasks to achieve the same make up project management.

The people involved strongly influence a project; at times in not so good ways. I choose to give a significant importance to understanding people while managing a project.

It is closely followed by communication. It is absolutely essential that the interactions should not stop.
